Year 5 WEMT Course Outline
✍️ Writing
Writing classes are carefully structured into three‑week cycles that progressively build students’ skills and confidence; in the first week, they are introduced to a new text type where they explore its stylistic features and plan their writing, in the second week they apply this learning through a timed exercise based on their planning, and in the third week teachers provide both individual and group feedback on the submissions, guiding students to refine their writing techniques, strengthen their critical thinking, and develop a deeper understanding of how to organise ideas effectively.
➗ Mathematics
The Mathematics program provides students with a thorough understanding of essential theories, principles, and formulas, equipping them with the skills needed for effective problem solving. Organised materials and a wide variety of practical questions reinforce these concepts. The course is divided into two complementary streams: one builds a strong foundation in core mathematical content, while the other applies this knowledge in the context of Selective School test preparation. This dual approach ensures students gain both confidence in mathematics and the advanced skills required to excel in competitive assessments.
📖 English
The English course comprises two integrated streams, both offering continuous interaction with the teacher to maximise engagement and learning.
-
Standard English Stream: Students explore a variety of text types and practise their comprehension skills through carefully designed questions that spark a passion for reading and motivate them to improve.
-
English Extension Stream: Students engage with more complex topics through detailed discussions on themes and ideas, developing a robust framework for analysing texts and addressing related questions effectively.
Together, these streams provide a balanced approach that nurtures both foundational reading skills and advanced analytical abilities.
🧠 Thinking Skills
The Thinking Skills course includes challenging problem‑solving and critical thinking questions that strengthen higher‑order reasoning. Students enhance their ability to analyse information, reason logically through arguments, and evaluate assumptions and perspectives effectively. This structured approach develops confidence in tackling complex scenarios and prepares students for success in Selective School testing and beyond.

📊 Smart Review Program
After completing their exams, students have the opportunity to review their performance using Pre-Uni New College’s Smart Review Program. This intuitive system creates an immersive classroom experience by synchronising all student devices with the teacher’s screen, ensuring students remain actively engaged throughout the session. The Smart Review system enables teachers to conduct a correct answer analysis, displaying key performance indicators for both the class as a whole and for individual answer choices. Teachers can also sort through specific questions, allowing them to deliver targeted instruction that addresses each student’s unique learning needs and strengthens overall understanding.
🔁 STTC Retest Challenge
Students can enhance their understanding at home by re‑attempting all the questions they previously answered incorrectly. Drawn from past exams, these questions provide an opportunity for students to test their improved skills and consolidate learning. Parental support is encouraged to help identify learning gaps early and guide students toward effective study habits.
📝 Exam Practice
Students attending class complete computerised tests under strict exam conditions, carefully designed to simulate the real Selective High School Placement Test experience. Each week, students sit two exams, alternating between Reading & Writing and Mathematical Reasoning & Thinking Skills. The timing of each exam matches the official NSW Department of Education requirements, ensuring students build familiarity with the format and develop effective time‑management strategies. It is essential that students arrive on time to make full use of the allocated exam period, as late arrivals will not be granted additional time in accordance with NSW exam rules.
📈 Dynamic Exam Report
Students and parents gain access to a dynamic exam report that clearly showcases each student’s performance relative to their peers. The report highlights individual strengths and weaknesses, offering valuable insights to guide the next steps in skill development. It also serves as a reference during individual consultations, where subject matter experts provide tailored strategies to support student growth and maximise academic outcomes.
Benefits of the STTC Program
Students sit weekly computer-based tests that mirror the Selective High School Placement Test — including the latest question types and formats.
Each test helps students develop time management, critical thinking, and exam strategies across all four test components
Regular exposure to timed assessments builds familiarity and reduces anxiety, helping students perform at their best on test day.
All content is carefully curated to reflect current Selective test standards, ensuring students are well-prepared and up-to-date.
